FINAL ROUND OF THE YOUNG INVENTOR COMPETITION (YIC) COMPETITION

In this final round of competition, all students are required to design, build and operate their rubbish collector to clean up, as many as they can, all rubbish samples being placed on the beach at different locations. Unlike the first round of competition, the collector is required to operate on a sand foundation. Several critical factors, such as how to ensure (i) the friction between wheels of the collector and sand, (ii) the maneuverability of the collector and (iii) the mechanism that can effectively collect the rubbish samples within a specified time, have to be considered during the design of the collector. In this round of competition, no restriction is in place to those addressed below, on the design of the collector, it can be manually, semi-automatically or fully automatically controlled. If any carrying cable is needed, the participants should make sure that it would not obstruct the moving path of the collector.
Dimension: No bigger than 900 mm (L) x 450 mm (W) x 450 mm (H) (the height of the collector should be controlled to avoid toppling over during maneuvering conditions)
Weight: Less than 10 kg
Budget: Below HK$ 1,000 (The organizer will subsidize a maximum of HK$ 1,000 for each group of students to purchase materials for building the collector).
Space: 5 m x 5 m (the size of the playground). The students will not be allowed to enter into the playground during the sample collecting period. In such case, the operator is only allowed to maneuver the collector without physically intervention and/or assistance in rubbish collection.
Duration: Each group of students will have a total of 3 minutes to collect the rubbish samples (e.g. coke cans, soft drink bottles, plastic bags, fruit peels… etc.)
Score: Different rubbish samples bear different scores depending on the size, shape and weight. The Champion will be the team which obtains the highest score in the competition.
